Description
It's a challenge to take a photo of Piazza del Campo, or Il Campo, the principal public space of the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. The bowl-like shape of the square makes it difficult to figure out what is level and what represents one beer too many! Il Campo is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It is renowned worldwide for its architectural integrity where the palazzi signorilli that line the square have unified rooflines. The homogenous architectural form of the square was not an accidental happening; the government created guidelines in 1297, before the actual building of the square and civic buildings. If structures didn't adhere, they were torn down. This signifies that it was always the city leader's intention to create a harmonious structure between the buildings and the square. The distinct formation of the Piazza del Campo is one of the reasons why UNESCO recognizes the historic center of Siena as a World Heritage Site and as the ideal embodiment of a medieval city. The Palazzo Pubblico (right) and its Torre del Mangia (center) stand on the southern side of the square. The square is paved with a fishtail design of red brick divided by lines of travertine creating a shell-like appearance. Il Campo is where the famed Palio takes place, a passionate horse race around the 333 m circumference of Il Campo. The track runs between the piazza's buildings and the central red-bricked area.

Very well captured for being in such a tight spot. I have been there and this is not an easy shot to get.
