Description
Edge of the dry salt Lake Hardy in the Murray Sunset National Park, Victoria, Australia. The lake has a pink colour due to Dunaliella salina algae which lives in this highly saline environment (the water can be 800 times saltier than sea water) and secretes beta-carotene, a red pigment which serves to protect the algal cells from damaging solar radiation.
