Description
The Cherokee Prayer Card serves as a background to honor Cherokee soldiers that have served and those that are serving our country. The Prayer card was carried by Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Roach during his military service in World War II and is now displayed in the Smithsonian. The Lord’s Prayer is first printed on the card in the Cherokee syllabary, a writing system developed in 1821 by Sequoyah (Cherokee, ca. 1770–1843). With the syllabary’s rapid spread, Cherokees became literate virtually overnight, and their literacy rate quickly surpassed that of surrounding non-Natives. Many Cherokees had adopted Christianity, and the Bible and Christian hymnals and prayers were translated into Cherokee soon after the syllabary was created.
Our American Soldiers serving in peacetime and in war is what makes America strong and keeps us free from tyranny. The symbols in the painting need no explanation.
